With Lando Norris to the fore, McLaren are resurgent

The British Formula One team could soon pose a threat to Red Bull

The world of F1 is witnessing a thrilling resurgence, with McLaren making a significant comeback. Lando Norris, showcasing his immense talent and determination, is at the forefront of this revival.

Much of the credit for the improvements, however, can be given to Andrea Stella, who was promoted to team principal in late 2022. He restructured the team and, vitally, invested in a wind tunnel. Testing of the cars’ aerodynamics had previously been done on a more limited basis in Germany. With a tunnel at their home base McLaren are now better able to tweak their cars during the season. Upgrades made last year to increase downforce on corners and reduce drag on the straights turned the car into one of the best in the sport on fast corners.

Lando, whose car was upgraded before Oscar Piastri’s (his team-mate), leapt nine places from one race to the next. After nine races McLaren had an embarrassing 17 points and were floundering in sixth place in the constructors’ championship; by the season’s end they were fourth, just behind Ferrari. Such progress may not have amounted to what the team’s website optimistically called “one of greatest turnarounds in F1 history”, but it indicated something of a return to form.

ATHLETES IN BUSINESS

Carmelo Anthony’s and Blake Griffin’s blueprint for athlete entrepreneurs

Transitioning into business careers beyond sports, leveraging what has been achieved through pro sport careers

Blake Griffin’s and Carmelo Anthony’s journeys from NBA stars to savvy businessmen offer a blueprint for other athletes looking to transition successfully from sports to business.

Carmelo’s ventures in the wine industry and sports management are not only successful business endeavors but also initiatives that pave the way for future generations of athletes. By leveraging his brand, forming strategic partnerships, and focusing on continuous learning, Carmelo has set a new standard for athlete-entrepreneurs, demonstrating that with the right approach, success off the court can be just as monumental as success on it.

Blake’s diversified portfolio, ranging from real estate and angel investments to youth programs and media production, exemplifies a well-rounded and strategic approach to wealth management. Blake’s ability to leverage his earnings, stay relevant through endorsements, and commit to community and philanthropic efforts, makes him a standout example of how athletes can build lasting legacies off the court.

Their journeys demonstrate the importance of early financial literacy, the value of strategic investments and partnerships, and the impact of giving back to the community.

Embracing emissions audits: A path to true sustainability

How investors can accurately identify which companies are making progress in reducing carbon emissions

Since we recently had Carbon Equity in a Playmakers Brew edition… Researchers from MIT and Clarity AI have found one trustworthy indicator for likely long-term emissions reductions: third-party auditing.

Companies that opt to verify their emissions via third-party auditors initially have higher carbon emissions and intensities than peers that rely on estimates. “Even the good players discover that their absolute emissions are initially at least 13.5% higher than previously anticipated,” said Florian Berg, a research scientist with the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative.

However, companies that release accurate emissions data, even if it’s unflattering, go on to set appropriate targets — and ultimately make more reductions than firms that don’t audit. Among the cohort studied, total emissions declined by 7.5% year over year and carbon intensity declined by 3.3% year over year.

The findings are important for companies that genuinely want to reduce emissions and for investors who want to back companies making a serious commitment to low-carbon business models. “It’s a signal,” Berg said. “You’re only going to obtain assurance as a company if you’re a leader in showing that you’re taking CO2 emissions seriously.”

Since I actually find the following quote from Boston Celtics’ Jrue Holiday and also the quote from his coach Joe Mazzulla simply great, they really deserve their place below:

Jrue: “I’m a utility guy. I’ll do whatever. I’m here to win. I feel like they brought me here to win, and I’ll do my best to do that. But at the end of the day this is (Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s) team, and I know it’s probably just as much my team as theirs, but again, I feel like I talked about this before, the pressure that they have on themselves to execute and to be great is a little bit different than my pressure. They’re superstars and I’m here to support.”

Joe: “I’m really tired of hearing about one guy, or this guy or that guy, or everybody trying to make it out to be anything other than Celtic basketball. Everybody who stepped on that court today made winning plays on both ends of the floor, and that’s the most important thing.”
