RISKMANAGEMENT

Why big wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner feels most at ‘peace’ at the mercy of Mother Nature

”I take the responsibility for minimizing the risk”

Chasing records is very much secondary for Sebastian Steudtner who has dedicated his life to pushing both the limits of the sport and his body.

“It’s complete chaos and you would think, as an outsider, it’s terrifying,” Sebastian tells CNN Sport. “It’s almost like a horrific experience, but it’s so peaceful to me. Everything becomes simple. Life in general, you know, you are consistently dealing with a hundred different things and fighting problems and challenges and you’re moving really quick.”

“Being exposed to this radical, physical, ginormous energy, and being humbled by it makes me really peaceful.” At that moment, he feels no fear. Instead, he reaches a ‘flow state’ where he doesn’t have to think, he just has to perform.

“Life’s a risk, right? The only thing that’s guaranteed is that we’re all going to die one day, so I believe taking risks is important,” Sebastian says, explaining his coping mechanisms.

“I’m not stupid. I’m not taking unnecessary risks. I would say I’m very calculated. Whenever I get scared and whenever I have fear of something risky that I’m doing, then I face it, I work my way through it, I take the responsibility for minimizing the risk.”

“I spend more time on the preparation and getting ready for it than actually surfing the waves, but I think risk is necessary if you have dreams.”

RESILIENCE

Carlos Sainz: Lessons in resilience and adaptability for business leaders

In the tumultuous world of F1 racing, Carlos Sainz’s story stands out as a compelling saga of resilience and adaptability. His career, marked by unexpected challenges and abrupt changes, mirrors situations many business leaders find themselves in today.

Earlier this year, Ferrari informed Carlos that his contract would not be renewed beyond the 2024 season, making way for Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari’s move placed Carlos in the unenviable position of competing for a team that had already planned his departure.

Despite knowing his tenure with Ferrari was ending, Carlos maintained exemplary performance levels, securing podium finishes and performing at the same high level as his teammate.

Carlos’ experiences in F1 reflect broader truths about resilience, adaptability, and performance under pressure that resonate well beyond the racetrack. His story offers profound insights for business leaders, proving that the right response to setbacks not only shapes one’s career trajectory but can also redefine it positively.

By adopting a pragmatic approach to challenges, prioritizing continuous learning, maintaining high performance under pressure, and fostering supportive relationships, leaders can build resilience not only within themselves but also within their organizations.

SUSTAINABILITY

The $3 trillion-plus annual sustainability opportunity

Driving long-term value through sustainability

More than 80% of the world's energy needs are met by fossil fuels, and the demand for energy is rising. Geopolitical conflicts have underscored the need for affordable and reliable energy. Higher levels of inflation have made decarbonization more difficult, raising the costs of new technologies. Electricity consumption from data centers, generative AI, and cryptocurrencies could double by 2026, compared with 2022 levels. At the same time, new sources of energy are ramping up: Renewable energy capacity additions around the world grew by almost 50% last year to a record high.

In the report, titled “Driving Long-term Value: Our Client-Centric Sustainability Strategy,” David Solomon, Goldman Sachs' chairman and CEO, writes that energy security and carbon reduction go hand in hand.

Sustainability requires a substantial amount of capital. The International Monetary Fund, meanwhile, estimates that around $3 trillion to $6 trillion is needed each year through 2050 for mitigation and adaptation financing.

Anything else? Yes! Mystik Dan edged a three-horse photo finish by a nose to win the 150th Kentucky Derby. The 18-1 shot, ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr, won the thriller in front of 156,710 fans at Churchill Downs with Sierra Leone in second place and Forever Young a nose further back.

Pre-race favourite Fierceness was among the early pace setters but as they faded Mystik Dan burst through on the inside rail to take the lead on the turn for home.

And you know what? Kentucky Derby horses aren’t getting any faster. Humanity tends to progress over time. Whether in athletics, technology or medicine, people generally perform tasks more efficiently than we did just a few generations ago.

The same isn’t true for horses

Feel free to enjoy the rest of the day as much as possible! Whether you become faster today is entirely up to you...
