Five Undervalued Sports Stocks to Buy and Hold

The value of these franchises on the private market is well below their stock prices – but each requires playing the long game.

In a market teetering on unpredictability, savvy investors are turning their gaze towards the sports industry, finding value in the unexpected quarters of sports stocks. With the recent upheaval, TKO Group Holdings saw an unforeseen 5% rise amidst a general market downturn, spotlighting the resilience and potential of sports investments. The strategic maneuver by Silver Lake Partners to privatize Endeavor, owning a significant stake in TKO, marks a pivotal moment, emphasizing the burgeoning appeal of sports assets.

Industry insiders, such as Christopher Marangi of Gabelli Funds, spotlight five key sports stocks that stand out for their significant disparity between public and private market values. This gap signals a great opportunity, albeit one that requires a strategic, patient approach. From the allure of iconic teams like the Atlanta Braves and the New York Knicks to the global fervor surrounding Manchester United, these investments embody a blend of financial promise and the enduring appeal of sports.

How can you tell if a football manager is actually good at their job?

The Alchemy of Success: Insights from Football Management for Business Leaders

In the dynamic realms of football and business, the quest for excellence is a journey fraught with unpredictability and challenges. The recent examination of football management's intricacies in The Athletic (How can you tell if a football manager is actually good at their job?) offers profound insights for business leaders striving for greatness in their domains. The linked article delves into the essence of what makes a football manager truly effective and draws parallels to the leadership qualities revered in the business world.

As John Muller from The Athletic writes: "How do we know if a manager is good? The question sounds almost too obvious to ask – anyone down the pub will be happy to explain it to you loudly over a pint – but professional organizations with millions at stake whiff on it every year. Apparently the answer isn’t great hair. It can’t be trophies, either, since those are pretty much only available to managers already at top clubs. If the study of up-and-coming coaches can be called a science, it remains a largely theoretical one."

So what experiences and learnings can you take from football into business?

The former rugby lawyer shaking up the world of private credit

Paul Weightman cut his teeth persuading players to join a breakaway Australian rugby league in the 1990s

… But it was his early career as a lawyer in Australian rugby league that provided the blueprint for the Barings raid, which has given Weightman a whole team of private credit experts for his nascent investment business Corinthia Global Management. This bold move draws parallels to the "Super League war" in Australian rugby in the 1990s, which upended Australian rugby league when Rupert Murdoch funded a new breakaway contest.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Weightman noted "similarities" between the sales pitch that was used then and Corinthia's success in attracting an entire team of senior executives from Barings, which is owned by MassMutual, one of America's biggest life insurers.

"Obviously they're different industries, but if you're going to recruit people to a new platform, it's helpful to have a team excited by a bold new opportunity," he said. "It's a similar road map."

Not surprising, all the more important to remember in everyday life…

How pervasive is the power of human touch? Physical touch by other humans shows social support and alleviates stress – stress that may otherwise interfere with performance in athletic tasks.

Two studies (in basketball, see link below) find that the extent of touch (i.e., being touched by 0, 1, 2, 3, or all 4 teammates) after the first free throw predicted success with the second free throw, but only when players missed the first free throw.

Bottom line: Physical touch thus indeed boosts performance under stress, superseding a range of other factors, likely also in other team sports and interpersonal relationships – which of course also determine business life...
